Refilling Toner and Cartridges

Toner and cartridges are used for laser printers and photocopiers. Compared to inkjet printers
that use wet or liquid ink, toners and cartridges are in dry powder form. As a result, toners and
cartridges are better suited for business and professional purposes because of better print
quality and higher volume and output ratio. Toners and cartridges for some types of laser
printers and photocopiers can be refilled; this is a good thing because new toner cartridges can
cost more than a hundred dollars each.

There are some third party services who refill toner cartridges. However, you can just purchase
a toner refill kit and do it yourself. In this post, we discuss the steps to refilling cartridges.

1. Before anything else, you need to make sure that the toner refill kit that you have purchased
is compatible with your empty toner cartridge. Each toner cartridge has a specific refill kit
intended for its use.

2. Unlike inkjet cartridges, toner cartridges contain a very fine powder pigment. Whenever
handling toners and cartridges, you need to be conscious of the health risks involved. When
toner leaks from the refilling kit or cartridges, it will be airborne and easily inhaled. Toner
contains carbon and other metallic substances that can be harmful to your health. Wearing
protective masks and gloves is essential when refilling your toner cartridges.

3. Clean the cartridge and the developer roller first. The toner can be cleaned with a piece of
moistened non-lint cloth. Meanwhile, wipe down the developer roller until all of the discarded
toner has been thoroughly removed.

4. Place the cleaned cartridge into the hopper and carefully pour the toner into it. Reseal the
hole using the materials included in the refill kit. This is a very important step because if a
foreign object gets in it can clog up the cartridge.

5. Once the developer roller is clean and dry, reinstall the toner. Access the cleaning utility from
the printer software suite (if one is included) and run it. Print a test or alignment page.
Generally, you can reuse the cartridge for about three times before the printing quality
experiences a significant decrease in quality. However, in some instances, you may need to
replace the toner cartridge sooner if you have issues earlier. When you can no longer reuse
your cartridges, dispose of them properly through the appropriate recycling facilities in your
area. Some recycling centers would even pay a small amount of money for old toner cartridges.
